Belarus Weather is characterized as moderately continental, alternating between maritime to continental patterns. Perhaps the biggest influence on Belarus Weather is the country’s proximity to the Baltic Sea - 257 meters at the closest point-, while thanks to its miniature size Belarus enjoys unified weather patterns through out.
Belarus Weather is typified by mild and damp winters, warm summers, and humid autumns with spring being the driest season. However, during the last few decades – and probably because of recent developments in climate change that have left their indelible marks across the globe - the continental factor has become less pronounced with winters becoming warmer.
Belarus is situated in a region with adequate moisture, the average rainfall in the highlands is 650-700 mm, and in the plains 600-650 mm. About 70% of yearly precipitation falls during the warm period. Spring and autumn have been known to be damp and showery, low pressure systems from the Atlantic having a bigger influence on the weather, while in general spring is the driest season.
Winters last between 105 and 145 days, January temperatures vary from -8 C to -4.5 C. Temperatures above zero lasts about 230-263 days. Extremely harsh weather is quite common during winter, with burly northeasterly winds and snowstorms. However, for more than a few years the winters have been know to be mild with westerly winds and temperatures around or even above zero.
Summer weather in Belarus has temperatures reaching 25-30°C and lasting for 150 days. The average temperature for July, range from 17 C to 18.5 C and are accompanied with elevated humidity levels. Confined thunderstorms are quite common in the late afternoon and evening and can be very heavy at times.
Snow is an important characteristic of Belarus Weather influencing its severity and moistening amount. Abundant snowfall may occur throughout the country from December to - occasionally - early March.
Steady blankets of snow cover the ground for a period of approximately 75 days in the southwest and 125 days in the northeast of the country. Average snow depths range correspondingly from 15 to over 30 cm.
